Abstract. | ABSTRACT

An experiment was conducted to assess the diversity among parental single cross hybrids of tomato and to evaluate double cross F1s to identify diverse single cross F1s.
The genetic material for the experiment composed of ten single cross hybrids which were evaluated for genetic diversity using Mahalanobis’s D2 statistics and forty-five double cross hybrids (DCHs) were developed by crossing ten single cross hybrids in all possible combinations without reciprocals during kharif 2023 and evaluated with commercial check NS-592.
Diversity analysis grouped ten parents into three clusters with highest inter-cluster distance observed between I and III clusters followed by II and III clusters. The parents falling in these different clusters may have wider variability and crossing these diverse parents from different clusters might result in high heterotic double cross hybrids. Among the 45 double cross hybrids DCH-3 (20.06 %), DCH-40 (5.93 %) and DCH-42 (-34.54 %) recorded significant better parent heterosis for fruit yield per plot reflecting that practical utility of improvement in combining ability. The estimates of combining ability variances indicated predominance of non- additive gene action for all the traits was found in the double cross hybrids of tomato. Combining ability analysis revealed that SCH-8 (0.43) was a good general combiner and DCH-3 (9.34) was best specific combiner for fruit yield per plot.
Among the double cross hybrids studied DCH-40 and DCH-3 were found to be the best cross combinations based on their per se performance, sca effects and better parent heterosis. The four single cross hybrids (SCH-1, SCH-4, SCH-8, SCH-9) involved in the most productive double cross hybrids were identified as the base material for initiating reciprocal recurrent selection. |
