The field experiments were carried out at D’ block of Seed Unit, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during rabi 2021-22 and 2022-23 and laboratory studies were conducted at Seed Unit, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during 2021-23 on " Studies on organic seed production techniques and seed longevity in black cumin (Nigella sativa L.)"The results revealed that irrespective of soil application of organic manures and foliar spray, significantly higher seed yield per hectare and seedling vigourindex-I were noticed in November 1st fortnight of sowing (849.43 kg/ha and 1032 respectively) compared to October 1st fortnight of sowing (768.17 kg/ha and 852 respectively). Soil application of organic manures and foliar spray 125 % N equivalent through vermicompost + Foliar application of cow urine spray @ 10 % at flowering and 15 days after flowering recorded significantly higher seed yield and seedling vigour index-I (880.08 kg/ha and 1,212 respectively) which was on par with recommended dose of fertilizer (869.50 kg/ha and 1,143 respectively) compared to 50 % N equivalent through FYM + 50 % N equivalent through vermicompost + Foliar application of cow urine spray @ 10 % at flowering and 15 days after flowering (757.67 kg/ha and 745 respectively).Combination of three machines viz., air screen cleaner, specific gravity separator and indent cylinder among seed processing methods showed the minimum seed recovery (81.04%), high physical purity (98.13%), thousand seed weight (3.92 g), seed germination (96.47%), shoot length (7.65 cm), root length (10.30 cm), seedling dry weight (20.53 mg/10 seedlings), and seedling vigour index-I (1,732) compared to (ungraded) i.e. bulk (99.04%, 82.49%, 2.86g, 82.52%, 5.81cm, 7.96cm, 16.63mg and 1,137 respectively). The storage studies on seed quality parameters registered that the seeds of AN-1 and AN-20 variety of black cumin seeds were stored in different packing materials of cloth bags, gunny bags, high density polythene bags and polythene (700 gauges) bags with 4 replications. Initial seed quality parameters were recorded for both variety AN-1 and AN-20 respectively which includes moisture content (7.0 and 7.38 %), germination percentage (94.75 % and 92.25 %), shoot length (8.12 and 7.65 cm), root length (5.95 and 6.02 cm) and seedling vigour index (1334 and 1262). Whereas, the observation recorded for seed quality parameters after fourteen months of storage showed increase in moisture content (9.25 %) and decrease in germination percentage (67.63 %), shoot length (2.23 cm), root length (2.01 cm), seedling vigour index-I (287) both AN-1 and AN-20 variety stored in polythene bag showed better seed quality parameters among all other packaging materials. The date of sowing during first fortnight of November and soil application of organic manures and foliar spray 125 % N equivalent through vermicompost + Foliar application of cow urine spray @ 10 % at flowering and 15 days after flowering gave highest seed yield with quality. Combination of three machines (air screen cleaner, specific gravity separator and indent cylinder) for seed processing and polythene bag packaging materials showed better seed quality parameters.
