520 _aABSTRACT Studies on biology, screening and management of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) in fodder maize were conducted at Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute (IGFRI), Southern Regional Research Station (SRRS), Dharwad and ICAR-RRC, Dharwad during kharif, 2023-24. The mean incubation period of fall armyworm, S. frugiperda averaged 2.29 ± 0.16 days, total larval period was 12.95 ± 1.03 days and total pupal period was 7.62 ± 0.17 days in male and in female 8.29 ± 0.57 days. The total life cycle was 33.20 ± 2.47 days for female and 30.38 ± 2.66 days for male. Morphometric studies on fall armyworm, S. frugiperda on fodder maize was also done. Out of the sixteen inbreds screened against fall armyworm, three inbreds viz., C 79–M, PML 36 and PML 46 were categorized as resistant, eleven inbreds viz., CDM 1330-E, PDIM 639, PML 96, PML 102, J 1553, PML 105, DDM 2309-o, CML 565, C 46, PML 85 and African tall were categorized as partially resistant and two inbreds DDM 2207-E and PML 93-2 were categorized as susceptible inbreds against fall armyworm. Among the different management modules of fall armyworm, IPM module was found superior over bio-intensive module but inferior over sole chemical module. The B:C ratio of IPM module (1.76) is identical to the chemical-intensive module (1.78) so IPM is better over chemical module. The chemical control module is likely to be discouraged as the use of chemicals on the fodder crop leaves pesticide residues on the crop that damage both animal and human health eventually and also found unsafe to natural enemies. But rather use of IPM module is advisable to farmers to include/ follow as it is beneficial and environmentally safe approach.
