520 _aABSTRACT Sixty seven sesame genotypes were evaluated in Augmented Block Design at Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding field, College of Agriculture, University of Agricultural Science Dharwad during kharif 2023. The objectives of the study were to estimate the genetic variability, association among characters, and to estimate genetic divergence among the germplasm. Analysis of variance revealed that there was significant difference among the sixty seven genotypes for all the 12 characters studied. GCV and PCV estimates were moderate for seed yield per plant, height to first capsule formation, number of primary branches per plant, number of capsules per plant, number of capsules on main stem, number of seeds per capsule and oil content. Heritability and GAM were high for seed yield, height to first capsule formation, number of capsules per plant, number of primary branches per plant and oil content which indicates due to additive gene action. Association studies, seed yield showed positive significant for most yield component traits. Path coefficient analysis based on seed yield as a dependent variable revealed that number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsule, test seed weight, plant height exerted positive direct effect on seed yield. Therefore, selection for these traits is suggested to improvement for seed yield. Genotypes are grouped into nine clusters based on genetic divergence using D2 statistic, Highest inter cluster distance were between cluster VI and cluster IX. Maximum intra cluster distance were for cluster VI followed by cluster I. Number of capsules per plant, plant height and height to first capsule formation contributed about 86.44 per cent to total divergence. Hence, crosses can be made between the genotypes of different cluster during hybridization programme for obtaining superior hybrids or transgressive segregent.
